The brooding of “Tequila and You” functioned as a brief highway rest-stop. One after another came songs (“Feel Like a Rock Star,” “Reality,” “Beer in Mexico”) with hooks as long as a country mile. Yet the majority of Chesney’s set had the exuberant feel of a showstopping encore. He featured a couple of tunes from that album Saturday, including “Pirate Flag,” an agreeable rocker that begins with a deceptive chime of mandolin before settling into the mid-tempo groove of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” “If you don’t mind tonight, we’re gonna pile some sunshine on this place,” Chesney promised ahead of the now-classic “Summertime,” whose opening couplet - “Summertime is finally here / That old ballpark, man, is back in gear” - surely warmed hearts, if not hands.Ĭhesney is touring behind a mellow new record, “ Life on a Rock,” that reinforces his mid-career persona as travel agent of the mind, with a specialty in Caribbean destinations. And given the unseasonable chill in the air Saturday night, tens of thousands at FedEx Field relied on Chesney’s powers of invention to unofficially kick off the summer season. Pop-country staple Kenny Chesney has dined out the last 10 years on escapist fantasies of sun-soaked leisure.
